Wetland Life Conservation Initiative
Wetlands in Uganda, covering 13% of the country’s land area, are vital for water regulation, biodiversity, and community livelihoods.
Lake Mutanda’s wetlands, home to diverse species, are under threat from human activities and climate change, which increase pollution and sedimentation. These ecosystems filter water, trap carbon, and mitigate floods, offering benefits comparable to engineered solutions.
Despite their cultural, ecological, and economic importance, Ugandan wetlands face accelerating degradation. WLCI is now implementing a programme of restoration to conserve the Lake Mutanda wetlands and promote sustainable management practices.
